The United States is providing Kiev with another package of assistance to improve Ukraine's defense capabilities. Another 150 million will be allocated when the country implements the required reforms.
The US Department of Defense announced a new $ 125 million aid package for Ukraine to improve the country's defense capability. The
message from the department, published on Monday, March 1, indicates that the funds are allocated under the Initiative to Support the Security of Ukraine and will be used to train fighters, purchase equipment and help military advisers.
This will allow Ukrainian forces "to protect the country's territorial integrity, ensure border security and enhance interoperability with NATO," the press release said.
For Ukraine to defend itself against Russian aggression
The Pentagon emphasizes that this step confirms the commitment of the United States "to provide defensive lethal weapons that will allow Ukraine to more effectively defend itself against Russian aggression."
The allocated funds will be used, in particular, for the purchase of two Mark IV patrol boats and the transfer of anti-artillery radars and tactical
military equipment to Ukraine.
The remaining $ 150 million in FY-2021 will be made available after the Pentagon, in collaboration with the Department of State, ensures that Kiev has made sufficient progress on key defense reforms. The US Department of Defense encourages Ukraine to continue to pursue reforms to strengthen civilian control of the military, increase transparency and accountability in the defense industry and procurement, and modernize the defense sector in other key areas in line with NATO principles and standards.
Since 2014, the United States has allocated more than $ 2 billion to Ukraine in security assistance.
