The convincing victory of the pro-European Action and Solidarity Party in Sunday's parliamentary elections in Moldova was a response to those who called the plans of the former party leader and current president Maia Sandu a "gamble". By giving this political force a parliamentary majority, Moldovans unequivocally supported the anti-corruption campaign launched by Sandu after her election as head of state last year, euronews.com reports. Sandu herself said that now she has all the tools to start a grand cleanup in the economy, social life and politics of one of the poorest countries in Europe. "This is about eliminating the corrupt judges and the corrupt prosecutors from the system, to clean up the other institutions and to make them independent of the influences of different corruption groups, which have been stealing public money for a very long time. We really want to simplify procedures regarding the confiscation of illegal assets and return of assets that were stolen from the state," Sandu said. The President of the Republic of Moldova and her party will have to work hard to unite a society deeply divided between those who seek to get closer to the EU and those who would like to maintain stronger ties with Russia, such as former President Igor Dodon and his Party of Socialists of the Republic of Moldova. "Consolidating society is a challenge for us. We are faced with serious problems, and we can overcome them all together if we unite. I know that every honest citizen of the Republic of Moldova, regardless of his political preferences, wants to live in a country where the state takes care of people, where the state has strong institutions that protect citizens and create economic opportunities so that they can make money at home. There are many things that can unite our society, and we will work on these issues," Sandu said. The result of Sunday's elections has already been called historic - for the first time in Moldova, a pro-European party wins a majority in parliament - but this also gave rise to huge expectations and hopes that will put a lot of pressure on Sandu and her allies: if they fail to meet these expectations and fulfill their promises, will not be able to carry out the real reforms that the country needs, the disappointment will also be huge.
