The new NATO strategy is designed to provide protection in the event of a simultaneous Russian attack on the Baltic and the Black Sea. The countries of the alliance will find a billion euros for the development of new digital technologies. On Thursday, October 21, NATO defense ministers agreed on a new general defense plan in case of a Russian attack on several fronts at once, thereby confirming the key goal of the alliance aimed at deterring Moscow. This strategy is designed to prepare NATO in case of a simultaneous Russian attack in the Baltic and the Black Sea region with the use of nuclear weapons, hacking of computer networks and attacks from outer space. “We continue to strengthen our alliance with better and modernized plans”, NATO Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg said after the first day of the alliance’s Defense Ministers’ conference, during which the participants also agreed to create a fund worth 1 billion euros to finance the development of new digital technologies. NATO does not consider a Russian attack imminent NATO representatives stressed that they do not consider the threat of a Russian attack imminent. At the same time, Western diplomats emphasize that the “concept of deterrence and defense in the Euro-Atlantic space”, as well as the accompanying strategy for implementing defensive plans, are necessary, since Russia is developing advanced weapons systems and transferring troops and military equipment to the external borders of NATO. Moscow rejects the accusations of aggressive behavior and, for its part, states that the North Atlantic Alliance is destabilizing the situation in Europe by moving closer to Russia's borders. DW
