The Insider published an investigation according to which chief of the Moldovan general staff leaked classified information to his GRU supervisors. Journalists gained access to the Telegram correspondence between Igor Gorgan, former chief of the Moldovan General Staff, and his GRU supervisor Colonel Alexei Makarov. Gorgan regularly reported on the internal political situation in the republic. Moreover, he reported on visits by representatives of the Ukrainian Defense Ministry, who purchased military equipment and shells for their armed forces. The President’s Office reacted to the investigation and issued the following clarification: “Such offences against the state should be punished in the most severe way for treason. In 2021, this person was removed from office by President Maia Sandu. The state honors awarded to him in 2006 ‘For Combat Merits’, in 2015 ‘Faith to the Fatherland’, as well as military ranks will be revoked. Such cases proof that constant monitoring and thorough vetting of persons working in the defense and security forces of the state is essential. Such insider offenders contribute to the emergence of hybrid threats to Moldova. That is why we need more efficient tools to fight treason,” the President’s Office said in a statement.
