Ion Chicu was nominated by the Party of Development and Consolidation of Moldova (PDCM) as a candidate for the position of President of the Republic of Moldova in the 20 October 2024 presidential elections. At the same time, he said his party would boycott the referendum on EU membership. The decision to nominate Chicu as a candidate for the autumn elections was made on Saturday, 22 June 2024, during a meeting of the National Political Council of the Party of Development and Consolidation of Moldova. “Considering the anti-democratic and speculative character of the referendum initiated for electoral purposes by the current president of the Republic of Moldova, as well as the risks for the constitutional order of the country that this idle event entails from the European point of view of our country, PDCM has decided to boycott the referendum without participating in the propaganda campaign and calls on the citizens of the Republic of Moldova to avoid the dangerous games of the current government for the sake of the continued existence of our state,” Chicu said in a statement, published in Facebook on Monday, 24 June. According to Chicu, the party’s central executive on 24 February 2024 approved the decision for PDCM to participate in this year’s presidential election with its candidate.
