The Party of Socialists announced its support for the candidacy of former Prosecutor General Alexandr Stoianoglo as a presidential candidate unaffiliated with political forces. Former President Igor Dodon at a briefing called on other opposition parties and political forces to support Stoianoglo’s nomination.
“PSRM will not nominate a party candidate in these presidential elections, PSRM will not nominate party chairman Igor Dodon or any of the party members. We will support a candidate of national compromise around whom several opposition forces can be consolidated. (...)
The opposition can jointly participate in the upcoming presidential elections. Most citizens agree that the time has come for the consolidation of opposition political forces, otherwise nothing will change in the country,” Dodon said.
He said people are fed up the “ambitions and egoism” of various politicians and the PSRM intends to support a non-party-affiliated candidate.
Stoianoglo himself also attended the press conference and confirmed his willingness to run for president.
“I am not a politician, I have no political projects behind, but I have the opportunity to talk to many political figures in the country who have not spoken to each other for many years,” said Stoianoglo.
Earlier, the Socialist Party repeatedly said that Dodon could run for office, and other parties are also considering such a possibility if the opposition fails to agree on supporting a single candidate.
The Moldovan presidential election and a referendum on Moldova’s accession to the European Union are scheduled for 20 October. The incumbent head of state Maia Sandu, Our Party chairman Renato Usatii, former head of Moldovan diplomacy Tudor Ulianovschi, former prime minister and PLDM leader Vlad Filat, former head of the DA Platform Andrei Nastase, leader of the Development and Consolidation of Moldova party Ion Chicu, and unionist Octavian Ticu, who last year said he would run as an independent candidate, have declared their desire to fight for the office.
