According to the former Prime Minister, the President would not have received funding from Western countries without it. ‘The current head of state destroys everything she touches and whoever succeeds her will have to cure the state. We will have to rebuild the state, which is now on a tragic path. Citizens need to understand that a functional state is able to fulfil its obligations to them - to pay pensions and salaries. And it does not exist in Moldova now,’ said Chicu who intends to run for president, infotag.md reports. He expressed hope that the authorities would not obstruct aspirants in registering as candidates for the 20 October elections, describing the obstacles as ‘very serious’. ‘The more candidates, the better for the voter. We are counting on success. And we are convinced of this by the local elections results. We got the fourth place after PAS, the Socialists and PSDE in terms of the number of people who voted for us and the number of elected mayors. There are 30 local party organizations and we expect to have a strong say in the main electoral exercise - the 2025 parliamentary elections,’ the politician said. Concerning the topic of a common opposition candidate, Chicu emphasized that ‘all this remains in history’. ‘It is not necessary to support the current head of state in the second round. And it is not possible for a marginal candidate to enter it. We need a healthy opposition representative,’ the former Prime Minister stressed, refusing to assess the candidate Alexandru Stoianoglo, whom the Socialist Party promotes as a ‘people’s president’. At the same time, he admitted that he ‘respected Stoianoglo and wished him success’.
