The government made concessions to farmers. Prime Minister Dorin Recean has said that the authorities will introduce a state of emergency in agriculture from next week, but only in a few districts. This measure was previously requested by farmers from the south of the country, but the authorities insisted that it was ineffective, newtv.md reported. “Next week, we will prepare a tool of emergency situation for farmers and, in particular, grain producers from Moldova, modelled on Romania. In addition, Mr. Deputy Prime Minister, please make sure that we have a ready package of normative acts and amendments to the legislation,” Dorin Recean said. In the middle of last month, farmers in Cahul, Cantemir and Vulcanesti districts, which have been hit hard by drought over the past three years, asked the government to declare a state of agricultural emergency in the three districts. A meeting with Vladimir Bolea, Minister of Agriculture and Food Industry, also took place. At that time, the officials told the farmers that the state of emergency was not a solution, as they would have to negotiate with the banks for deferred payments and penalties anyway. Recently, the authorities also decided to allocate 100 million lei from the government’s intervention fund to help grain producers affected by heat and drought.
