Ilan Sor has finally been sentenced to 15 years in prison in a case collectively titled Bank Fraud. The judges rejected the lawyers’ appeal and upheld the decision of the Chisinau Court of Appeal, reports tv8.md. The appeal against Sor began back in November 2023. Since then, the hearings have been postponed several times. On 13 April 2023, Ilan Sor was sentenced to 15 years’ imprisonment in the Bank Fraud case. According to the Anticorruption Prosecutor’s Office, Ilan Sor has to pay back more than 5.2 billion lei to Banca de Economii. Sor considers the verdict as “an illegal decision that violates all procedures, norms and laws”. Sor fled the country in 2019 after the Democratic Party left government. In 2022, the US and UK imposed sanctions against him.
