The Council of the European Union has approved the accession of neutral Switzerland to the Military Mobility project, also informally referred to as “military Schengen”.
It is designed to ensure the rapid movement of troops across the EU - whether by road, rail, sea or air - without delays at the borders of the union’s member states, reports dw.com.
A press release from the European Council notes that Switzerland’s participation will bring “substantial benefits” to the project. The Swiss authorities applied to join the Military Mobility project in September 2024. The country will officially become a participant after the necessary administrative procedures have been completed.
Canada, the US and Norway have also been invited to participate in a “military Schengen” in 2021. A year later, the United Kingdom also received a similar offer. All these countries are not part of the European Union, but are members of NATO.
