The statement comes amid a motion to remove the president from office filed by the opposition, which is due to be presented on Tuesday, February 11, at the parliament's plenary session. “This is move is useless because I will leave office in a few months. It is an unfounded motion because I have never violated the Constitution. After a while, the Romanian parliament will vote for my removal and Romania will enter a crisis. We will become a laughing stock of the whole world. To save Romania from this crisis, I am resigning as President of Romania,” Iohannis said, g4media.ro reports. Iohannis’ mandate as president expired on December 21 in the wake of canceled elections. Since then, he has remained in office until a new head of state is elected. Presidential election in Romania is scheduled for May 4, and Iohannis previously said he would not resign.
