Romania’s Constitutional Court ruled on Tuesday, 11 February, that the office of president becomes vacant as of 12 February and that Senate President Ilie Bolojan will serve as interim head of state.
On 10 February, Klaus Iohannis resigned as president of Romania, g4media.ro reported.
The statement was made in the context of a motion to remove the President from office filed by the opposition, which was to be tabled on Tuesday, 11 February, at the plenary session of Parliament.
Iohannis’ mandate as president ended on 21 December amid the cancellation of elections. He has continued in office since then.
Romania’s presidential election is scheduled for 4 May, and Iohannis has previously said he has no intention of resigning.
