Moldova, along with Ukraine, will receive gas from Azerbaijan via the Trans-Balkan Corridor once the route becomes fully operational. The Ministry of Energy clarified that the agreement signed the day before by the Ukrainian operator Naftogaz and the Azerbaijani state oil company SOCAR for test gas supplies via the Trans-Balkan Corridor paves the way for gas deliveries to Moldova as well, reports Logos-Press. “We have been working for a long time to include Moldova in the ‘vertical gas corridor,’ and the agreement between Naftogaz and the Azerbaijani state company opens the way for supplies of Azerbaijani gas via this route,” the Ministry of Energy clarified. In April, during his visit to Azerbaijan to participate in the 11th Ministerial Meeting of the Southern Gas Corridor Consultative Council, Moldova’s Minister of Energy Dorin Junghietu stated that our country is interested in receiving Azerbaijani gas to ensure its own energy security. “Sustainable diversification of supply sources, including gas imports from Azerbaijan, will allow Moldova to meet its energy needs,” said the minister. According to him, Chisinau is “fully committed” to the Southern Gas Corridor project and is interested in developing the so-called “vertical corridor” for gas supplies further into Moldova. “We are the first country to commercially use the Greece-Bulgaria gas interconnector. Natural gas will still play an important role in Moldova’s energy structure,” added Junghietu. The minister emphasized that energy security, resilience, and market integration remain key priorities for the republic.
