The contract signed between Moldovagaz and Gazprom is valid until October 2026, but currently there are no technical possibilities for resuming gas supplies from Russia, said the head of Moldovagaz, V. Ceban. At the same time, Energy Minister Dorin Junghietu stated that the termination of this contract would lead to legal proceedings, and for this reason the Republic of Moldova retains it in force, preferring to leave the supply sector in the competence of Energocom. The problems with the possible resumption of Russian gas supplies, however, relate to the alleged debt of the right bank of the Dniester, which Gazprom estimates at $ 709 million, tvrmoldova.md reports. “I can’t tell you what will happen then (after October 2026). I don’t think it’s appropriate to discuss technical aspects at this time. From a commercial perspective, the formula may be acceptable, but it’s challenging to manage the technical volumes currently transported through pipelines, especially during the winter season. Even if we emerge from the winter period, I’m not aware of any changes in the distribution of volumes through Turkstream,” said Vadim Ceban, the head of Moldovagaz, on Realitatea. “In the long run, I see no problem with resuming discussions with any supplier. Our competitive advantage lies in our balanced approach and building partnerships with resource-rich suppliers, such as our relationship with Romania,” Ceban added. In turn, Energy Minister Dorin Junghietu noted that although the contract with Gazprom is still valid, the Russian side is no longer complying with it. At the same time, according to the official, the Republic of Moldova does not intend to initiate the termination of the contract. “Why go to court with Gazprom and spend money when Energocom can buy gas and sign bilateral contracts? The contract expires in 2026 anyway,” the minister said. The contract for the supply of natural gas to the Republic of Moldova was signed in December 2006 between Moldovagaz JSC and Gazprom PJSC, revised in October 2021, and is valid until September 30, 2026. Therefore, the Russian company is obliged to ensure the supply of gas up to the border with the Republic of Moldova.
