Moldova Will Temporarily Stop Purchasing Gas: Volatility as the Reason

Procurement for the 2026-2027 gas year may be postponed, and its actual start will depend on market dynamics. The authorities explain this decision by the high volatility of international market prices at the moment. “Energocom must complete its gas procurement strategy by March 31, 2026, but based on the current situation and exchange prices, there is no reason to start purchasing gas right now. We will have clarity on how these purchases will be made by the end of April,” said Energy Minister Dorin Junghietu, according to Radio Moldova. The government explains the delay by significant fluctuations in gas prices. “The price has decreased the day before, and now it’s starting to rise again. The situation is unstable, and the situation in the Persian Gulf is uncertain. This is more of a time for speculation rather than long-term purchases,” Junghietu explained. According to the minister, the government intends to diversify its supply sources and focus more on bilateral contracts in order to reduce its dependence on exchange fluctuations and ensure greater predictability. The authorities have stated that they will monitor the market’s development in the near future and determine the appropriate time to start purchasing gas to avoid excessive costs for consumers.
