According to Romanian President Nicusor Dan, the assistance was exclusively aimed at protecting against cyberattacks and ensuring the security of digital systems, and did not involve any influence on the electoral process. “In the cyber sphere, they provided crucial support during the elections in the Republic of Moldova; I repeat, specifically in the cyber sphere, and not by influencing the electoral process,” Dan said, as quoted by zdg.md. Nicusor Dan noted that the activities of the security services are carried out within the law, and that the nature of their work implies limited public disclosure of results. He added that some of the results of their work are made public, whilst others remain classified due to the specific nature of such agencies. The Romanian president also stated that the appointment of heads of the secret services is a political decision and requires agreement between the head of state and the pro-Western majority in parliament.
