More than 60% of Moldova’s roads are in poor condition. According to Infrastructure Minister Vladimir Bolea, roads meeting European standards will only appear gradually as investments are made and the country’s transport network is modernized. The scale of the problem, Bolea noted, makes it impossible to resolve in the short term, bani.md reports. “Europe built its infrastructure over many years, not in a single day,” the minister emphasized. He specified that around 6,000 kilometers of roads are managed by the Ministry of Infrastructure through the State Road Administration. Another approximately 6,000 kilometers are maintained by district councils, while the remaining roads fall under the responsibility of local authorities. According to Bolea, the available financial resources are insufficient for the full repair and maintenance of the entire road network. In 2026, about 1.8 billion lei was allocated from the Road Fund for the maintenance, repair, and design of state roads. A similar amount was allocated to district administrations. In this context, the government decided to provide additional funding to local authorities through the “Europe Is Near” program, enabling mayoralties to invest in the repair of local roads, the construction of bridges, roundabouts, and other infrastructure projects. The minister believes that the decentralization of investments and greater involvement of local authorities will help accelerate the modernization of road infrastructure in the coming years.
