People of Ukraine doubt the correctness of Ukraine’s rapprochement with Europe. At the forthcoming summit, the European Union will demand for Ukraine’s anti-corruption reforms. On July 9, Brussels will host EU-Ukraine summit, the main topic of which will be reforms against corruption. Previously, law enforcement agencies confiscated luxury items: a limited-edition car costing three hundred thousand dollars and a crystal falcon for forty-six thousand dollars. Both items became exhibits of the mobile exhibition “The Park of Corruption”, now based in Kiev. It is reported that the visitors to the anti-corruption exhibition become indignant and realize the extent of the problem, the representative of the European Union anti-corruption initiative Vladimir Sologub said. This spring the European Union agreed to sponsor Ukrainian anti-corruption reforms. Financial assistance is estimated at more than one billion dollars. In return, Europe requires vast reforms from Ukraine, but so far there are no any. There is already an independent National Anti-Corruption Bureau. It works well, as it is separated from law enforcement agencies, which have close ties to corruption. But this is also a negative side, as the Bureau cannot independently imprison the perpetrators, thus still submit their cases to court. Well, at this stage there is a gap, as the courts can release the defendant for a certain reason. Thus, the fight against corruption comes to a halt. “Ukraine is asked to create a separate anti-corruption court – said Andrew Wilson, a professor at London University College – but this is such a fiction; no one believes that it will be independent. So this is the main stumbling block”. The International Institute for Strategic Studies member Anastasia Vorontsova said that the government is most concerned about the upcoming elections for the moment and no one can know whether it will give due attention to the development of anti-corruption methods. Meanwhile, many Ukrainians begin to give up on the Ukraine’s fidelity to the European Union, as they expected more positive changes. The EU uses the forthcoming summit to show its engagement with Kiev. Source:  Oreanda news agency
