The European Union expects Moldova to take urgent measures to improve the situation in the country, the EU delegation in Moldova said, noting that the resumption of macro-financial assistance is not expected until the Moldovan authorities focus on reforms, investigating the theft of the billion and ensuring democratic election. The European Union insists that the Moldovan authorities ensure transparency and democratic parliamentary elections, return a billion and punish those responsible for banking theft, “regardless of their political affiliation”. The EU also demands to ensure the independence of the justice system and a more serious fight against corruption. “Until all these conditions are fulfilled, the European Commission has taken the decision to substantially recalibrate its financial assistance and redirect support to projects that have a direct, positive impact on Moldovan citizens. Payments under the Macro-Financial Assistance and EU budget support programmes have also been put on hold, pending tangible progress in the aforementioned areas”, says press release of the EU Delegation in Moldova.
