The Head of Merkel Party Defended the Nord Stream 2

Discussing the construction of the Nord Stream 2 gas pipeline, the chairman of the Christian Democratic Union (CDU) Annegret Kramp-Karrenbauer supported the project’s supporters. For me Nord Stream 2, as for the others, of course, is not the project that I support with all my heart. However, fundamental decisions have already been made, the project cannot be turned back”, said Kramp-Karrenbauer. According to the chairman of the CDU, it should be accepted that the project Nord Stream 2, which was initiated under another German government, cannot be stopped. Kramp-Karrenbauer also noted that Germany maintained economic relations with Moscow even during the Cold War, and they were stable. “The question of whether Germany makes itself too dependent on Russian gas is justified,” she admitted at the same time. “Now we are building LNG terminals, possibly for American liquefied gas”. “Thus, I think that the danger of such dependence is not very great”, the chairman of the CDU emphasized. Kramp-Karrenbauer criticized the U.S. threat to impose sanctions because of the construction of the gas pipeline. “Sanctions are not the best way to communicate between friends and partners. The U.S. pursues its own economic interests, which is completely legal. But Washington should hear the answer of Germany: we are engaged in diversification, we have other sources of supplying”, the head of the CDU said.
