Warsaw announced record spending for the modernization of the armed forces. The plans are to strengthen the eastern flank and the purchase of the newest generation of aircraft. Polish authorities intend to invest nearly $50 billion in the modernization of their armed forces, says the country’s government plan, published on Thursday, February 28. Financial investments in the defense are called “record”. “This is certainly a big challenge, but also a chance for the development of the defensive capabilities of the Polish army”, said Polish Defense Minister Mariusz Blaszczak, who signed the modernization plan. “We will resolutely and effectively change the Polish army and will equip it with modern equipment. The increase in personnel is also a goal that I set for myself”m says the minister. According to Blaszczak, the plan takes into account current problems facing Poland, including “strengthening the eastern flank” of the country, which is also “strengthening the eastern flank of all NATO”. It also provides for the purchase of 32 aircraft of the latest generation. The $ 48.9 billion will be spent by 2026, but “the needs of the army are much higher”, the defense minister said. Source: DW
