According to the new bill prepared by the U.S. senators, sanctions can be imposed on the largest Russian banks and extended to the energy and defense sectors of the Russian economy. American senators on Wednesday, April 3, submitted to Congress a bill on the introduction of new sanctions against Russia in connection with the intervention in the presidential election of 2016. Sanctions are expected to be imposed on the largest Russian banks, such as Sberbank and VTB, as well as to extend them to the energy and defense sectors of the Russian economy. In addition, the bill provides for a ban on operations with the Russian foreign debt. The draft document was prepared by democratic Senator Chris Van Hollen and Marco Rubio from the Republican Party. According to the bill, the Director of national intelligence of the United States will have within 30 days after any Federal elections to report whether they interfered with Russia or any other foreign state. If such interference is found, it is proposed to impose sanctions within 10 days. In 2014, in connection with the annexation of Crimea and the role that the Russian authorities played in the Ukrainian crisis, the U.S. and the EU imposed sanctions against Russia. Since then, they have been repeatedly tightened and extended. Source: DW
