In the wake of the plans of Germany to abandon the use of coal and nuclear energy, gas is becoming an important alternative, said the leader of the Christian democratic Union Annegret Kramp-Karrenbauer. The Chairman of the Christian democratic Union (CDU) Annegret Kramp-Karrenbauer has supported the construction of the pipeline Nord stream 2. “The CDU has always stated that it supports the project, regardless of whether it is important or not”, said Kramp-Karrenbauer in an interview with dpa on Thursday, May 2. According to her, the role of natural gas in Germany will grow, especially if considering that the country is going to completely abandon the use of coal and nuclear energy in the coming years. At the same time, the CDU leader admitted that she understood the concerns of Eastern European countries such as Ukraine and Poland, and added that German Chancellor Angela Merkel takes her best to regulate security guarantees for Ukraine. Manfred Weber promises to block the construction of the pipeline Commenting on the fact that the joint candidate from the CDU/CSU bloc in the upcoming elections to the European Parliament Manfred Weber is critical of the Russian-German energy project, Kramp-Karrenbauer said that it is “quite normal”. In April, Weber in an interview with the Polish newspaper The Polska Times said that if he was elected Chairman of the European Commission, he would do everything possible to block the construction of a gas pipeline running along the bottom of the Baltic sea from Russia to Germany bypassing Ukraine. At the same time, the politician expressed confidence that this project is “not in the interests of the European Union”, as it will increase the EU’s dependence on Russian raw materials. DW
