National Security Advisor to the U.S. President John Bolton told reporters about the results of the meeting with President of Belarus Alexander Lukashenko, RIA Novosti reports.
“This was a very important meeting. It did not bring us to any specific decisions, but it was very important to discuss all these issues,” Bolton told reporters after negotiations with Lukashenko.
He also noted that the mutual restoration by countries of diplomatic presence at the ambassadorial level was not discussed at the meeting, and said that there were difficult moments in relations between the countries.
“We need to see progress in certain areas in order to have progress on the issue of restoring diplomatic representation,” said Bolton, adding that he did not plan to make a decision on this issue during this visit to Minsk.
On Thursday Bolton arrived in Belarus to discuss regional security issues and meet with President Alexander Lukashenko, Foreign Policy reports.
Foreign Policy noted that Bolton’s trip is a new sign of relations softening between the United States and Belarus.
In 2008, relations between Minsk and Washington deteriorated due to Washington imposing sanctions against Minsk. This led to the recall of the ambassadors.
In March this year, Belarus officially notified the U.S.A. about the abolition of restrictions on the number of employees of the American embassy in the republic.
