Moldova and Transdniestria remain in "freezing" regime. This opinion is shared by Russian expert Alexander Yermakov. In his analysis for the Russian Council on Foreign Affairs he noted that "Transdniestria can be called a textbook example of frozen but not resolved conflicts of the post-Soviet space," infotag.md reports. However, unlike other long-standing conflicts, the probability for the Transdniestrian conflict to grow into the hot phase is still extremely small. On the contrary, in Moldova Igor Dodon's Socialist Party, which concentrated power in its hands after the overthrow of the local "gray cardinal" Vladimir Plahotniuc, is determined to solve the Transdniestrian issue by reintegrating Tiraspol on the basis of autonomy within the framework of a common federal state,” the expert noted. According to him, "such a scenario is supported by Russia and is likely to be of interest to the EU, which Moldova is economically dependent on". "However, the above scenario also has many opponents, in particular, unionists who stand for unification with Romania. Given that Romania is actively militarizing and gradually becoming a key NATO member in the south of the "eastern flank", such ideas, to put it mildly, do not inspire Moscow. But so far, the chances of unionists to integrate Moldova in Romania look even less real than the prospects to resolve the Transdniestrian conflict by federalizing the country," the expert said. He noted that "Transdniestria is entering a new decade in the same unrecognized status, complicating economic and social development, with a diplomatic dispute with Moldova over the presence of a small peacekeeping group of Russian troops and deteriorated relations with Kiev due to Russian-Ukrainian conflicts."
