"As long as I am President of the United States Iran will never be allowed to have a nuclear weapon," said Donald Trump, addressing the nation. He condemned Tehran’s attacks on US military facilities in Iraq and announced that the United States was evaluating options in response.
US President Donald Trump condemned Iran's missile strikes at military facilities with US troops in Iraq. " As long as I am President of the United States Iran will never be allowed to have a nuclear weapon," said Donald Trump, addressing the nation at the White House on Wednesday, January 8.
Washington will immediately impose additional sanctions on the Islamic Republic, Trump added. Tehran "Iran must abandon its nuclear ambitions," the American leader said. Trump also called on a number of countries, including Britain, Germany, France, and Russia to “recognize the new reality” and reconsider their positions on a nuclear deal with Iran.
According to the Head of the White House, the United States continues to evaluate options for responding to Iran’s attack. Americans should be "incredibly grateful and happy," because US citizens did not die as a result of rocket attacks, the Head of State added. This was facilitated by the precautions taken and a warning system that “worked perfectly,” Trump said. He intends in the coming hours to turn to NATO for greater involvement of the alliance in promoting peace in the Middle East.
The world condemns Tehran
Iran’s attack has sparked a wave of criticism in the global community. NATO Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg condemns Islamic Republic rocket attacks on US forces. European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen has called for an end to violence and a return to negotiations.
The Official Baghdad considered Iran’s attacks on US bases a violation of its sovereignty. And the United Nations called on the parties to show restraint immediately.
IRGC called the attack on US air base as a revenge for killing the Iranian general
The Islamic Revolutionary Guards Corps (IRGC) on the night of January 8 reported about rocket attacks on the Ain al-Asad air base in western Iraq, where American soldiers are stationed. The attack is an act of retaliation for killing the Iranian general, the IRG stressed. The US Department of Defense announced an attack on its two bases.
Relations between the United States and Iran sharply escalated after a U.S. air strike on Baghdad airport on January 3, when the Iranian general Qasem Soleimani who led the elite division of Al-Quds of the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps was killed.
He was considered one of the most important military ranks of Iran - the general oversaw the fight against the Islamic State, was responsible for Syria and Iraq, and received orders directly from the Iranian spiritual leader of ayatollah Ali Khamenei. Soon after the death of Soleimani, Ali Khamenei appointed him successor to Brigadier General Esmail Ghaani.
