The United States impose sanctions against former Democratic Party leader Vladimir Plahotniuc and his family. This officially stated Mike Pompeo the US Secretary of State, on January 13, adding  that he publicly admits that Plahotniuc’s actions endangered the independence of the democratic institutions of Moldova. “The corruption of Vladimir Plahotniuc has undermined the rule of law and seriously compromised the independence of the democratic institutions of Moldova. Today I am publicly affirming this. The USA is on the side of Moldova in the fight against corruption”, Secretary of State Pompeo wrote on his Twitter page. His official statement says that “Plahotniuc, being in an official position, was involved in corruption.” In this regard, according to a statement on the website of the US State Department, Plahotniuc and his family were deprived of the right to obtain a US visa. Together with the ex-leader of the Democrats, the sanctions touched his wife Oxsana Childescu and both their children. Recall that Plahotniuc left Moldova on June 14, 2019, after the Democratic Party recognized the Sandu government. According to the most common, but never proven version, Plahotniuc left Moldova unnoticed through the Transdniestrian section of the border and flew to the United States. In August, it became known that the Anti-Corruption Prosecutor's Office opened a criminal case against the former Democrat leader, in which he was accused of creating a criminal group, blackmail, frauds and money laundering.
