Ukraine settled to abandon the transit of Russian gas and to do that a program to optimize the country's gas transportation system is underway. The head of Ukrainian GTS Operator company, Sergiy Makogon stated in an interview with Liga.net on Wednesday, April 8.

According to him, the country is ready for zero gas transit. At the same time, Makogon noted that Kiev will not stop trying to counteract the Nord Stream 2 construction so it intends to use the capabilities of "American and European partners," REGNUM informed.

After refusing to transit Russian gas, an alternative for Ukraine, according to Makogon, is transit between European countries, as well as possible deliveries of American liquefied gas through Poland to some countries of Eastern Europe.

On April 2, it was reported that the Dutch vessel Flintstone is to engage in technical work on the construction of the Russian Nord Stream-2 gas pipeline.

On March 24, it was reported that the Akademik Chersky pipe-laying vessel, that the head of the Russian Ministry of Energy Alexander Novak called capable of building the Nord Stream-2 gas pipeline, continued its journey west.

In February, the ship left the port of Nakhodka in the Far East and sailed towards Singapore and then to Sri Lanka. Then the course was laid to the city of Suez but later changed to the port of Maputo in Mozambique.

In December 2019, Washington imposed sanctions on the gas pipeline, that caused project completion moving forward by several months. In early March the Ukrainian Naftogaz discussed with the US authorities additional measures against Nord Stream 2.

According to Russian President Vladimir Putin, the United States is trying to reduce Europe’s competitiveness by imposing sanctions on the energy project.

Nord Stream 2 is being built from Russia to Germany along the bottom of the Baltic Sea having as a goal direct and reliable gas supplies to Europe. EU countries mainly support the project and participate in its implementation. So, only the USA, the Baltic republics, Poland and Ukraine are against the project.
