Representatives of the largest conservative faction in the European Parliament - the European People's Party (EVP) - demanded that the President of the European Commission, Ursula von der Leyen, take steps to abolish border control in EU countries from May 15. This stated the letter distributed on Tuesday, May 12, and signed by many heads of national parties’ delegations included in the faction. In addition, the letter stated requirement to abolish mandatory quarantine for EU citizens who enter other EU countries. Conservatives believe that at the initial stage of the pandemic borders closing was justified but now the situation with coronavirus spread in the EU countries is approximately at an equal level and the restrictions have lost their meaning. Graduation Border Opening Plan On Wednesday, the European Commission is going to present a plan for internal borders gradual opening in the EU. The dpa agency, which has a draft plan at its disposal, reports that it provides for the gradual opening of borders, which should last several months. According to the Worldometers resource who track the spread of coronavirus situation, as of May 13, more than 1.6 million people (1,675,742) have been infected since the start of the pandemic in Europe, nearly 700 thousand patients (685,246) have recovered and 155 762 people died of COVID-19 disease from pulmonary consequences.
