MP Nikita Turcan said that the party of socialists has nothing to do with the scandalous bill banning communist symbols in Moldova. “The appearance of this bill on the parliament’s website in this form will be the subject of a special investigation,” deputy Turcan wrote in social networks. “The Party of Socialists of the Republic of Moldova is categorically against the prohibition of any symbolism associated with the Soviet past of our country. Back in 2010, when the then government first spoke about banning the sickle and hammer and other Soviet symbols, we strongly opposed this absurd, anti-popular and anti-democratic initiative,” wrote Turcan. “The Party of Socialists has always considered and continues to consider the Soviet period as one of the most important periods in the history of our country. It was during this period that our peoples defeated fascism. We have always honored and continue to honor the Victory Banner showing the sickle and hammer raised above the Reichstag in May 1945. The Republic of Moldova is the legal successor of the Moldavian Soviet Socialist Republic. It was in the Soviet period that the industrial, scientific and social base of our country was created: the largest enterprises, urban areas, power plants, hospitals, schools, universities were built, the Academy of Sciences was created, national theaters, museums, philharmonic society were opened, musical groups that became our national treasure. It was during the Soviet period that the largest investments were made in industry, the agricultural sector, the healthcare system and the education of our Republic. We are convinced that much of the Soviet experience is relevant today,” the deputy writes. “The Party of Socialists of the Republic of Moldova declares that it has nothing to do with the text of the bill No. 233, registered on June 11, 2020, in the form that has become public. Deputies who initiated this bill recall it for revision. The fact of this bill appearance on the site in this namely form will be the subject of special proceedings,” Turcan wrote in social networks. Recall, the draft law appeared on the parliament’s website proposing amendments to the Law on Freedom of Expression, prohibiting the use of the symbols of the “totalitarian communist regime” - the sickle and the hammer for political purposes.
