Mike Pompeo announced joint cooperation with the EU in responding to events in Belarus.
US State Secretary Mike Pompeo considers it possible to impose sanctions against Belarus and suspend oil supplies to the republic amid the Belarusian authorities’ actions during the protests. The head of the State Department said this in an interview with
Radio Liberty, distributed Wednesday evening, August 12.
“What is that that we consider we can do not just unilaterally but in a multilateral way to deliver good outcomes for Belarusian citizens, whether that turns out to be out as sanctions or about product deliveries? Those are yet things to be determined,” Pompeo said.
Also, the Secretary of State informed about the forthcoming joint cooperation with the EU in responding to events in Belarus.
"We will have to work on this. <...> We were incredibly troubled about the elections and deeply disappointed that it wasn’t more free and more fair," the official said.
Earlier, Pompeo said that the United States is
deeply concerned about the fate of Belarus after the presidential elections.
Also, the Secretary of State called on the authorities of the republic
to observe citizens’ rights to participate in peaceful assemblies and refrain from using force.
