Sirbu: Impeaching Sandu is Almost Impossible

Sergiu Sirbu argues that removing Maia Sandu from the presidency is legally a complex process. "The court must find a violation. Removal requires two-thirds of the votes in parliament, which is very difficult," the MP said in the Punctul pe AZi program on TVR Moldova, realitatea.md reports. "I’m not even talking about the procedure for dismissal through a referendum, because for this to happen, more people must vote for dismissal than voted for the president in the elections. In fact, it is extremely difficult, almost impossible. Impeachment is almost impossible, but it should be taken into account that Maia Sandu is blocking and ignoring the majority, so we are on the verge of another legal collapse. On the one hand, we do not have a government, the president cannot be removed, but parliament cannot be dissolved either. If the president ignores the majority, we find ourselves in a different situation where responsibility for the failure to vote for the government cannot be placed on parliament, and we may witness an even more challenging period when parliament has limited powers and the country has an interim government," Sirbu said. Director of the Legal Resources Center Vlad Gribincea said he did not believe that removing the president from office is possible. "This is a major battle, and I don't think anyone can win much politically. Only President Maia Sandu will get points," Gribincea said. PSRM deputies appealed to the Constitutional Court to check the constitutionality of the decree signed by Maia Sandu which re-nominates Natalia Gavrilita for the prime minister post. At the same time, the Socialists demanded that the Constitutional Court suspend the decree signed by Sandu pending a decision.
