Kiev asks the EU for urgent accession
The Ukrainian leader called on the European Union to accept the country into the union under a new special procedure.
Ukraine has appealed to the European Union with a request for the country's immediate accession under a special procedure. This was announced by President Vladimir Zelensky on February 28.
“We are appealing to the European Union for Ukraine’s urgent accession under a new special procedure. We’re grateful to our partners for being with us. But our goal is to be together with all Europeans and, most importantly, to be on an equal footing. I'm sure that's fair. I'm sure we deserved it. I’m sure that this is possible,” the head of state said during a special address, the video of which was posted on Facebook.
The President added that yesterday he spoke with the leaders of Portugal, Lithuania, France, Poland, the prime Ministers of Belgium, Spain and Britain.
According to him, the support from European partners is unconditional and unprecedented.
Earlier, the head of the European Commission, Ursula von der Leyen, said that Ukraine is a European country and the European Union wants to see it in its ranks.
Poland, Slovenia, Lithuania and Ireland have expressed their readiness to support Ukraine’s application to join the European Union.
