The European Parliament has adopted a resolution calling on EU heads of state to grant candidate status to Moldova and Ukraine.
529 deputies supported the document, 45 voted against and 14 abstained, infotag.md reported
“In the context of Russia’s brutal war of aggression against Ukraine, this step will demonstrate leadership, determination and foresight,” the Resolution stated.
At the same time, it stresses separately that obtaining full membership does not imply “a fast track” and that “accession must be based on meeting the EU membership criteria and depends on the effective implementation of reforms.”
At the same time, the European Parliament stresses that “enlargement is consistent with the political, economic and security interests of the European Union.”
EP deputies also believe that Georgia should become a candidate as well, but after completing the necessary reforms previously announced in the EC recommendation.
“Ukrainians, Moldovans and Georgians deserve to live in free, democratic and prosperous countries that are worthy and loyal members of the European family,” the European Parliament believes.
The European Council will consider applications for candidate status by Moldova and Ukraine on June 23-24.
