The minister said he signed official letters to 27 agriculture ministers from the EU, the US, Canada, Japan and Norway, asking them to back the creation of Moldova’s agriculture development and solidarity fund.
‘Today, I took an important step by addressing our European colleagues, development partners. It is crucial to have the support of colleagues from the EU, the US, Japan, Canada, Norway in strengthening the Moldovan agricultural sector, which is one of our economy main pillars. The creation of this fund will make it easier for our farmers to adapt to the new challenges and ensure a sustainable development of the sector,’ Vladimir Bolea said, newtv.md reports.
Discussions on the subject began last week when Bolea visited Brussels.
‘The initiative to create this fund was also discussed during the meeting with the European Commissioner for Agriculture, Janusz Wojciechowski, as a response to the increasingly acute problems faced by farmers in Moldova, which has been hit by severe drought and climate change in recent years.
The development and solidarity fund is to financially support farmers, modernize agricultural infrastructure, promote technological innovation and increase resilience to extreme climatic conditions that affect the productivity and stability of agriculture in the country,’ the ministry also said.
Last week, drought-affected farmers organized protests in the country, including near the Presidency and the Parliament. They will have a meeting with President Maia Sandu on Wednesday, 25 September.
