The Council of the European Union will discuss the possibility of stripping Hungary of its voting rights at its upcoming meeting on May 27, according to the meeting agenda. Stripping a member state of its voting rights is permitted under Article 7 of the Treaty on European Union. This can occur if serious and persistent violations of the Union’s values by that state are established, meduza.io reports. The upcoming hearing will be the eighth within the procedure against Hungary. It was initiated back in 2018 due to suspicions of restrictions on freedom of speech in the country and has since never been formally closed. However, the issue has not been discussed since 2020.
