Former chairman and founder of the Democratic Party of Moldova (DPM), Dumitru Diacov, addressed his former party colleagues, urging them to unite and run together in this autumn’s parliamentary elections.
In a Facebook post, he expressed confidence that several parties with the same ideology would be unable to enter parliament individually and only dilute voters’ support, reports unimedia.info.
Diacov’s message is addressed, in particular, to the European Social Democratic Party (ESDP), the Respect Moldova movement, and the Modern Democratic Party, which, in his view, originate from the same political core and target the same electorate.
“The start of the election campaign is drawing closer. Political agitation and party activism are becoming increasingly noticeable. The result could be the same if party leaders do not show wisdom. Experience shows that several parties of the same orientation cannot overcome the electoral threshold. It is no coincidence that the left formed a bloc of four parties…,” Diacov writes.
According to him, PAS is running in the elections independently, while the unionists, divided into several groups, are trying to attract the electorate with loud but unrealistic statements, given the clear positions of the authorities in Romania.
In this regard, Diacov advises his former colleagues to set aside ambitions and seek compromise.
“To ensure that any of my former party colleagues are represented in the future parliament, greater efforts are needed. Someone must make concessions, while the others take responsibility. It’s not just about returning to the classic name – DPM–but also to the traditions, vision, and political conduct of the Democratic Party. European socialists should have a serious partner in the future Parliament of the Republic of Moldova,” concluded former Democratic leader Dumitru Diacov.
