The decree was signed by Moldovan President Maia Sandu.
The Special Envoy for European Affairs and Strategic Partnerships will have a mandate to strengthen support for the Republic of Moldova’s accession to the European Union, promote the political dimension of accession negotiations, and develop relations with the state’s strategic partners to strengthen peace and security – in close cooperation with the president, the government and parliament, according to deschide.md.
Previously, Nicu Popescu held the position of Deputy Prime Minister, Minister of Foreign Affairs and European Integration. In this capacity, he led Moldova’s diplomatic efforts to start negotiations on EU accession and contributed to strengthening relations with EU member states, the United States and other partners of the country.
Nicu Popescu is also co-director of the European Security Programmed at the European Council on Foreign Relations (ECFR), headquartered in Paris.
The position of special envoy is designed to strengthen the activities of the presidential administration by attracting specialists with in-depth knowledge in areas of strategic importance to the state, with the aim of implementing the priorities set by the president.
