Home / World / Merz Warned of the Danger of the Superpower’s Rise
German Chancellor Friedrich Merz addressed participants at the World Economic Forum in Davos and warned that we are entering a world of “superpowers”, which poses a serious threat.
He is quoted by The Guardian, reports eurointegration.com.ua.
Friedrich Merz began by saying that the calm and peace in Davos contrast sharply with the world, whose old order is “collapsing at an astonishing speed”.
Merz said that Russia’s war of aggression against Ukraine is the most dramatic example, but the changes are much deeper, he notes, adding that China has broken into the ranks of superpowers and the “global leadership position” of the United States is being challenged.
“We have entered an era of superpower politics. The international order of the last three decades, based on international law, has always been imperfect. Today, its foundations have been shaken,” said the chancellor.
He warned that a world where only power matters is a dangerous place – first for small states, then for medium-sized states, and ultimately for large states.
Recalling the rise of Nazi Germany, Merz sternly warned the Davos delegates: “I do not say this lightly. In the 20th century, my country, Germany, went down this path to a bitter end. It dragged the world into a black abyss”.
US President Donald Trump stated in Davos that Canada exists thanks to the United States.
The criticism from the US president came after the Canadian prime minister gave a speech at the World Economic Forum on 20 January in which he spoke of a “breakdown in the world order”, alluding to Trump’s policies.
The French president also spoke in Davos that day. In his speech, Emmanuel Macron expressed his conviction that the US is seeking to weaken Europe amid tensions over Greenland.
