The topic of the unification of the Republic of Moldova with Romania was raised again during a question-and-answer session following President Maia Sandu’s speech at a meeting of the Parliamentary Assembly of the Council of Europe (PACE). While answering a French representative about her recent statement to British journalists, the head of state emphasized that she had given an honest answer and suggested that unification could be a solution to prevent Russia from re-occupying Moldova, according to deschide.md. “I gave an honest answer to the question. I am concerned about the situation in my country. It is extremely important that the Republic of Moldova be part of the free world. We do not want to be under Russian influence or occupation again. We understand this very well, and we want Moldova to be part of the free world,” said Maia Sandu. The President also noted that the Republic of Moldova is a democratic state, and the majority of its citizens support European integration. “I am fully committed to the European path of the Republic of Moldova, and I hope that the EU member states will remain committed to the enlargement process. This is a matter of great importance to us, and yes, we are deeply concerned,” the President emphasized. Maia Sandu added that the process of European integration is based on the principle of merit, and both the Republic of Moldova and Ukraine have fulfilled the necessary conditions for officially opening accession negotiations with the EU.
