Interior Minister Daniella Misail-Nichitin was asked whether the head of the General Police Inspectorate, Viorel Cernauteanu, would be dismissed following the corruption scandal within the police force. “These are matters that are currently being examined and investigated. I do not believe that the head of the organization should be called upon to resign following every incident. We are acting in accordance with the law and established procedures,” the minister replied, according to realitatea.md. Today, the National Anticorruption Centre (NAC) announced the arrest of six officers from the Police Inspectorate of the Botanica district of the capital on charges of passive and active corruption under aggravating circumstances. According to the investigation, the case involves the systematic extortion and receipt of sums ranging from $3,000 to $10,000, both in cash and in cryptocurrency. According to the investigation, the bribes came from individuals involved in drug use and trafficking. During the searches, documents relevant to criminal cases currently being handled by the NAC were seized, as well as items subject to expert examination and confiscation. The investigation is continuing with the aim of establishing all the circumstances of the case and identifying any possible accomplices. The agency reiterated that, in accordance with the law, all persons are presumed innocent until a final court decision has been handed down.
