Talking about the main achievements of the Republic of Moldova for the year of his tenure as Head of the EU Delegation to the Republic of Moldova Peter Michalko said that the EU’s relations with Moldova developed on the basis of the framework Agreement on Association and the Free Trade Agreement, which allowed Moldovan goods and services to enter the market where are 500 million people. “There is a progress concerning this issue, as evidenced by the growth of Moldovan exports to the markets of the EU countries, whose share has already reached 68% of total exports”, said the diplomat, noting that the role of the Agreement is to increase the competitiveness of Moldovan products in other parts of the world. Peter Michalko drew attention to the shortcomings of the Moldovan authorities, for example, noting, that “the European Union wanted to promote reforms in the legal sector of the republic”. “But, unfortunately, we did not see this, because there were no reforms in this sector”, he said, pointing out the need for Moldova to respect  such values as democracy, human rights, free expression of the citizens’ will. The head of the EU delegation noted that recently these values were not observed, meaning the annulment of a mayoral election in Chisinau, despite the fact that the elections themselves were free and democratic, they were recognized by international observers and experts. According to the diplomat, the European Union wants the authorities of the Republic of Moldova to continue reforms, leading to the transformation of the government institutions to serve the interests of the citizens of the country.
