According to RTA regular expert Sergey Cheban, there is a situation when early elections to parliaments of Moldova and Ukraine may be held one after another. The analyst assumes that the European Union thus tries to ‘cleanse’ political elite of Kyiv and Chisinau at the same time.
Sergey Cheban, RTA:
Judging by the latest statements of the President of Moldova Igor Dodon, early election in the country gets more likely every day. We can certainly see in the statements of the PSRM leader a certain attempt to repeat the spectacular PR stunt of Volodymyr Zelensky in neighboring Ukraine, who has already dissolved the Parliament. However, this does not change the essence – Moldova still does not have a ruling coalition, and it is not clear who and with whom could create it in the current conditions.
The way to maneuver is very narrow for all parties: right-wingers and socialists have tried many times unsuccessfully to create a quasi-coalition to ‘overthrow’ Plahotniuc – it didn’t work out, ambitions interfere. There are less and less chances to agree, and the closer the ‘X day’, the more parties have mutual claims to each other.
The coalition with Plahotniuc’s Democratic Party is a suicidal choice both for Sandu and Nastase, and for Igor Dodon. Obviously, this step will automatically deprive the right-wingers of support from Brussels that is determined to take the presumptuous oligarch down. The path of cooperation with the Democratic Party is also closed for socialists and will mean a complete discrediting of the PSRM in the eyes of the voters, and in the camp of Igor Dodon’s allies in Russia.
Finally, the democrats’ leader Plahotniuc could repeat the trick of 2014-2015 and engage the necessary number of independent deputies and defectors from other parties in the ‘coalition of the same name’ – they would undoubtedly be found. However, the very possibility of this option is severely suppressed in Brussels: they made it clear back before the election that they will not allow such a story and simply will not recognize the elections.
By and large, Moldova’s international partners could have prevented early elections in the country by agreeing to this or that ‘unpopular’ coalition, or put pressure on the PSRM and ACUM to create at least a temporary alliance against Plahotniuc. However, this did not happen – apparently, the scenario of early elections in some degree works out for everybody.
It all came together when the President of Ukraine Zelensky announced the dissolution of the Verkhovna Rada: this only confirms
the assumption that Ukraine in 2019 was the main topic for the West. Now, after they knocked out toxic oligarch Poroshenko of president’s office, it is the time to cleanse the Verkhovna Rada ‘while it is hot’. A major alteration awaits the Ukrainian Parliament: apparently, riding on the wave of Zelensky’s popularity there will be new faces of politicians of absolutely new type in Rada.
Moldova may also be pushed towards such a scenario. By and large, the scenario when the teams of “young pro-European democrats” come to power against the background of deep fatigue of society from crises and stagnation has already happened – this is how all the color revolutions in the CIS countries took place. Only now these processes are directed against those who came to power in the first wave of ‘democratization’ in Ukraine and Moldova.
It is possible that the early election campaign in Moldova will become more vivid, and the preferences and accents of Western countries in it will be unambiguous. The reasons and meaning of the impasse in which Moldova finds itself today have long seemed implicit. However now one can say that it was meant ‘to buy some time’ and to create favorable conditions for overthrowing Poroshenko’s power in Ukraine.
Things will definitely come to a head in Moldova, and the processes inside the country will be held in sync with the next political show in Ukraine. But not all the political figures of modern Ukrainian and Moldovan politics will reach the end of these productions for sure.
