Romanian Foreign Ministry Responded to Moscow’s Accusations Regarding the Port of Giurgiulesti

The Russian Ministry of Foreign Affairs has leveled new accusations against Romania after Bucharest acquired the operator of the Giurgiulești International Free Port in the Republic of Moldova. Yury Pilipson, Director of the Second European Department at the Russian Foreign Ministry, stated that the port could be used to transport various cargoes to Ukraine, including those intended for the Ukrainian armed forces, according to Radio Moldova. “The acquisition of the operator of the Giurgiulesti International Free Port – through which more than 70% of the Republic of Moldova’s imports and exports by waterway pass – was presented in Bucharest as a step toward ‘economic reunification’.” It was also announced that this transportation hub would be used “in the process of Ukraine’s reconstruction.” The implementation of such ambitious plans, however, lies in an uncertain future. Meanwhile, Romania is already directly involved in providing military and logistical support to the Kyiv regime. “This circumstance raises questions regarding the true objectives behind the use of the port of Giurgiulesti in the near future. Especially since the port has long since been transformed into a transit hub for the delivery of various categories of goods to Ukraine, including those intended for the needs of the Armed Forces of Ukraine,” said the Russian official. In the same statement, Pilipson also criticized discussions regarding the unification of the Republic of Moldova with Romania. According to him, promoting this topic in the public sphere is a campaign designed to create the impression of growing support for unification. He cited the results of Moldova’s census, according to which 76.7% of citizens identified as Moldovans and 8% as Romanians. Romanian Foreign Ministry spokesperson Andrei Cernia called Moscow’s statements “Stalinist propaganda” and criticized Russia for attempting to cast doubt on the national identity and sovereignty of other states. In April 2026, Romania acquired ICS Danube Logistics, the operator of the Giurgiulesti International Free Port, from the European Bank for Reconstruction and Development. The transaction was carried out through the National Company “Constanta Seaport Administration.”
