The Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Romania issued a new press release on June 11 in support of the government of Maia Sandu and the parliamentary coalition of MPs of the socialist Party (PSRM) and the ACUM bloc. The Ministry stressed that the Moldovan Parliament formed a coalition and the government, and now the Romanian authorities are interested in the format of further cooperation.
“Given the recent events in Moldova, including the formation by the Parliament democratically elected in the elections of 24 February 2019 the new ruling coalition and the new government, Romania believes that in a democratic state the will of citizens, expressed by voting and reflected in the political configuration of the Parliament, is the only one that ensures a legitimate political process based on dialogue”, the Romanian foreign Ministry statement reads.
At the same time, the Ministry notes that Romania is ready to continue cooperation within the framework of the Strategic Partnership for European Integration of the Republic of Moldova, if Chisinau strictly follows the agreements reached earlier and implements the provisions of the Association agreement with the EU. “Romania considers it very important that the Republic of Moldova has a clear commitment to further implementing cooperation projects with Romania, in particular, the project of interconnection of power grid”, press release notes.
At the same time, Romania highly appreciates the position of the Republic of Moldova regarding the settlement of the Transnistrian conflict. “We believe that Moldova's position on the Transnistrian conflict with respect to the territorial integrity of the country within its internationally recognized borders is extremely important”, the Romanian Foreign Ministry stressed.
We remind that the other day there was news report that the head of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Romania Teodor Melescanu did not recognize the Government of Sandu and sees no problem in early elections. After that, the Romanian Foreign Ministry provided clarification stating that the words of Melescanu were taken out of context and he actually did not mean it.
