“We could cut off the whole relationship. If we did, what would happen? You'd save $ 500 billion,” the US president said.
US President Donald Trump has threatened a complete severance of US relations with China. He expressed this threat on Fox Business on Thursday, May 14. Journalist Maria Bartiromo asked the head of the White House what he thinks about the proposal to refuse to issue visas to Chinese students. “We can do a lot. We could cut off the whole relationship. If we did, what would happen? You'd save $ 500 billion,” Trump replied. The US President defined this amount, which corresponds to the volume of Chinese exports to the United States, as "lost money."
He added that he did not want to speak to Chinese President Xi Jinping now, and repeated that he did not intend
to resume negotiations on a trade deal with China.
Beijing wants to break agreement with Washington
The topic of revising the agreement came up after the Chinese state-run Global Times published that the advisers to the Chinese authorities insisted on resuming negotiations with the US over the deal. The United States, in their opinion, weakened during the coronavirus pandemic and can no longer afford to wage a trade war with China. Thus, it is in Beijing’s interests to break the agreement and conclude it under new conditions, Chinese experts say.
On January 15, China and the United States signed an agreement after a year-and-a-half trade war between the two countries. This document obliges Beijing to sharply, at least by $ 200 billion in two years, increase imports of American products. In particular, purchases of energy from the United States, namely oil, oil products, gas and coal, should grow by $ 52.4 billion over this period compared to 2017.
