Dodon stressed that restoring the territorial integrity and the Republic of Moldova’s functioning as a single and indivisible organism are crucial for building a modern, prosperous and successful state.
The head of state stated this at the UN General Assembly meeting, aif.md wrote
He recalled that since 1992, the Republic of Moldova has been constantly touching upon the issue of settling the Transdniestrian conflict both within the framework of the UN and OSCE, and within other international platforms, however despite efforts made it remains unresolved.
“The reasons, perhaps, lie in the lack of appropriate political will on the part of the interested parties, the existence of shadow economic interests of a number of circles from different countries of the region we are located in, alike within the Transdniestrian problem’s pronounced geopolitical nature.
In this regard, we emphasize the importance of a constructive approach on the part of all participating in the well-known 5 + 2 format players, which is empowered to determine the final solution to this conflict. I am convinced that the guarantor states and observers will make additional efforts to quickly identify a comprehensive, peaceful and sustainable solution.
This decision should be based on respect for sovereignty and territorial integrity of the Republic of Moldova within its internationally recognized borders, with a special status for the Transdniestrian region adoption and guaranteed provision of the political, economic and social rights of the population of this country’s region,” Igor Dodon said.
Over the last years, he added, “we have focused on issues requiring priority action. These include ensuring and guaranteeing free movement throughout the country, creating a single economic space and promoting confidence-building measures.”
Igor Dodon expressed regret that the situation caused by COVID-19 has created new obstacles to the free movement of people, goods and services between the two banks of the Dniester which negatively affect human rights, aggravate the situation in the Security Zone and delay the negotiation process.
“Adopting a final political decision and signing relevant documents on the complete settlement of the Transdniestrian conflict should solely be based on initiatives and proposals formulated directly by the Republic of Moldova and not on those developed abroad.
Therefore, we will make the necessary efforts to ensure that the first draft of the Basic Parameters and Principles of the Final Model Resolution is as soon as possible being developed and presented in the first half of the next year to all in the 5 + 2 format participants and stakeholders for discussion and very much hope to find a common denominator in conflict resolution.
In this context, we advocate expanding UN cooperation with the OSCE in managing peacekeeping operations, ensuring respect for and promoting fundamental human rights in conflict regions facilitating mediation and conflict resolution. We count very much on the OSCE as a stabilizing factor at the regional level.
At the same time, we believe that there are necessary prerequisites for resuming the bilateral dialogue with the Russian Federation to determine a warehouses in Kolbasna decision. About 20 thousand tons of obsolete ammunition remain on the territory of the Republic of Moldova. We are aware that territorial integrity restoration and the functioning of the Republic of Moldova as a single and indivisible organism are of decisive importance for building a modern, prosperous and successful state, “the President said.
