The EU ambassadors agreed imposing sanctions against Alexander Lukashenko and 14 Belarusian officials responsible for rigging the presidential elections in August and violence against protesters. They will be banned from entering the EU, their assets will be frozen.
The decision will be published in the official EU journal on Friday, November 6, according to a Radio Liberty correspondent from Brussels.
Mass protests in Minsk and other Belarusian cities have been going on since August 9. Then Lukashenko was declared presidential election winner. The participants in the speeches believe that the results were falsified in his favor and demand his resignation.
Western countries did not recognize Lukashenko's legitimacy. The EU has imposed sanctions against dozens of Belarusian officials.
