This is the first time in the history of the United States when congressmen try to remove a president from power for the second time. Democrats accuse Trump of inciting riot and endangering national security and the constitution.
After the
assault on Capitol by US President Donald Trump's supporters, the Democratic congressmen intend to initiate a new, second procedure for impeachment of the president. Democrats will submit an initiative to the US House of Representatives on January 11, Democratic Congressman Ted Lieu said in an interview with CNN on Saturday evening, January 9.
Lieu, who co-sponsored the resolution, said a plenary vote is expected next week, but he and his associates prefer Trump to
resign voluntarily or that US Vice President Mike Pence takes steps in this direction. The draft resolution accuses Trump of inciting riot and describes him as a threat to national security, democracy and the constitution.
"We have videos of the speech where (Trump) incites the mob. We have videos of the mob violently attacking the Capitol. This isn't a close call," Lieu posted on his Twitter account on January 9.
Attack on the Capitol
The riots during the attack on the
US Congress killed five people, including a policeman. Trump first praised the rioters, but later released another video condemning the violence. Reuters, citing sources, reports that Trump decided to urge the mob to calm on the advice of his closest advisers, who warned him of the legal consequences and even the possibility of being removed from power.
Donald Trump is leaving the presidency on January 20, ceding to the president-elect Joe Biden. The Democrats' initiative to impeach Trump has not yet been supported by any of the Republican congressmen, and even if the House of Representatives decides to start Trump's impeachment next week, there is almost no time for the Senate to pass a sentence.
At the same time, the Democrats, putting forward their resolution, want in any case to get Trump to be banned from holding public office. This would deprive Trump of the opportunity to run again for the presidency of the United States in 2024.
