If the State Department passes the resolution, Russia will become the fifth country on the US State Department’s list of sponsors of terrorism, which already includes Cuba, North Korea, Iran, and Syria.
The United States Senate on the evening of Wednesday, July 27 (Thursday, July 28 in Kyiv), passed a resolution urging the White House to recognize Russia as a state sponsor of terrorism because of its actions in Ukraine, Georgia, Syria, and also in Chechnya, reports The New York Times.
The document notes that Russia’s actions have led to the deaths of “countless innocent men, children and women.”
A similar resolution has also been submitted to Congress, the lower house of the US Parliament. It is expected to be supported by Speaker Nancy Pelosi.
The congressmen and senators won’t be able to make this decision themselves; it will have to be approved by the State Department, which is the US MFA.
If the resolution is adopted, Russia will become the fifth country on the US State Department’s list of sponsors of terrorism which already includes Cuba, North Korea, Iran and Syria.
A week earlier US Congress urged Secretary of State Anthony Blinken to declare Russia a state sponsor of terrorism. US House Speaker Nancy Pelosi said that if the government refused, otherwise Congress itself would do so.
Earlier it was reported that the Verkhovna Rada supported an appeal to the US House of Representatives and the Senate to recognize Russia as a state sponsor of terrorism.
